Use the Microsoft extension and Paint
If you want a built-in desktop workflow, Windows first needs to read the HEIC file. Microsoft says the HEIF Image Extension enables Windows to read and write HEIF files. It also says a compatible video extension is required for images with .heic, .hif, or .heif extensions.
- Open Microsoft Store and install HEIF Image Extension from Microsoft Corporation.
- If Windows still asks for a codec, follow the prompt for the HEVC Video Extensions package.
- Right-click the HEIC photo and open it with Paint.
- Open the File menu, choose Save as, select JPEG picture, and choose a new filename.
This method is useful when you regularly edit one photo at a time. For a batch, the browser tool avoids opening and saving every image separately.

Common Windows problems
Paint says the file format is unsupported
Install the Microsoft HEIF extension and the video extension requested by Windows. If Store access is disabled by your workplace, use the converter above without installing either package.
The JPG has the wrong filename
Keep the base name and change only the extension when saving manually. The browser converter does this automatically, so photo.heic downloads as photo.jpg.
You need the original HEIC later
Keep it. JPG is easier to share, but conversion does not add detail. Treat the HEIC as the original and use the JPG as the compatible copy for forms, email, and Windows applications.
